IFMBE is pleased to share a recent Nature Careers interview featuring Prof. Ratko Magjarević (Past President of IFMBE), published on 30 March 2026 under the title “Now is the time for scientific societies to guide global research.” This interview explores the importance of scientific societies in supporting researchers, strengthening collaboration, and helping shape the future of global research.

Prof. Magjarević discusses the value of joining and leading scientific societies, emphasizing their role as platforms for networking, visibility, and international collaboration. The interview also points to the pressures many societies now face as virtual networking and open-access publishing continue to reshape traditional membership and publishing models.

For the IFMBE community, the interview is especially meaningful. Prof. Magjarević served as President of IFMBE for two terms, from 2012–2015 and 2022–2025, and has long contributed to advancing biomedical engineering across regions and disciplines.

We invite our members, partners, and the wider biomedical engineering community to read and share this timely reflection on why scientific societies remain essential to research leadership, professional development, and global engagement.
