Professor Fumihiko Kajiya, former president of IFMBE, passed away on November 17, 2025. Professor Kajiya spent many years researching biomedical engineering, interacting with researchers from around the world and conducting collaborative research. He was also actively involved in academic activities, making significant contributions to the development of the field of biomedical engineering and receiving numerous awards and fellowships. He served as president of IFMBE for three years from 1994 and vice president of IUPESM for three years from 1997. He also served as chair of IAMBE for three years from 2006. Fumihiko Kajiya | IAMBE
In that period, he also served as president of the Japan Society for Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering (now the Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering) for two years from 1998. In recognition of these activities, he was awarded the IUPESM Award of Merit (Biomedical Engineering) at the 2015 World Congress on Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering. His award-winning lecture was titled “Improvement of Healthcare Quality by Medical and Biological Engineering (MBE) with the collaboration of Academia, Industry, the Government, and the People.” He was always cheerful, friendly, and energetic.
